Work ON your Business not Just IN it!

I’m having a planning afternoon. It’s so important to carve out time to work ON your business rather than just IN it.

When we start our business, we have lots of time to focus on what we want to do and where we want to go. We have big dreams, we map things out, we have a billion and one ideas.

However, as your business grows and you attract more and more clients then there are more things to do in a day than there is time.

It’s all too easy to spend the majority of your week working IN your business. Meaning seeing clients and doing any of the prep or follow-up work for them.

This was obviously want you wanted all along and why you started in the first place. You of course WANT to be busy with clients.

But if you don’t set aside intentional time to work ON your business then you can end up attracting clients; work with them and then when they have the results they want/need and you finish working with them, you have to almost start ALL over again.

Can you relate?

I did this for far too long in my business and it led to feast or famine results = clients (and money) for a few months and then a lull and then I had to work on getting NEW clients.

And this pattern continued until I put proper systems and structures in place and valued the importance of planning days.

Ways to work ON your business:

  • Set goals - long-term and short term. Where do you want your business to be in 10 years then 5 years and then 1 year and turn it into a 12 month plan;

  • Check your business vision and actions are in alignment;

  • Plan content;

  • Create content; set goals;

  • Make connections e.g. arrange podcast interviews or being a guest blogger;

  • Analyse what’s been working in your business (and what hasn’t!);

  • Design new courses etc.

I love it when my clients get to this point. They often carve out a few hours after our coaching call to implement and develop their business.

Do you need to take a step back and review things in your business? Can you carve out a day each week or month to step into the CEO of your business?

Start small if you need to - even an hour every other week will make a difference.

Tell me in the comments below, how often would you love to spend working ON your business?
